Firstly, thanks for commenting, but in...Anonymous:

Firstly, thanks for commenting, but in the future do you think you could put an initial or something (or even just a random letter of your choosing) at the beginning or end of your comments? I allow anonymous comments for accessibility reasons (as some people's setups make it difficult or impossible for them to log into Blogger reliably) but it gets really confusing for me when people just comment as "anonymous" without ANY way for me to tell them apart from all the other "anonymouses".

OK, now that's out of the way...wow, 3.5 pounds as an adult is a really small cat! Nikki is 8 pounds, which is pretty average, so size-wise I am sure she can hold her own outside. But I don't think I would let a three and a half pound cat out unsupervised either, unless I had some good sturdy cat-fencing around the yard (or a patio enclosure thing). And I've never met a Devon Rex IRL but they look like really interesting cats!

And, yeah, I am definitely finding that with the younger cats, taking them out on the leash and harness currently provides the best balance of safety and fun for them (or at least Cora and occasionally Shadow; Brodie is still acclimating to the feel of the harness, and I've definitely learned it's better to let that happen indoors!). This morning I took Cora out on a long lead and let her sniff around in the garden while I ate my breakfast; it was very pleasant for both of us!Anne Corwinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04940566603711834053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4162778936006928808.post-72922028738430931772010-05-21T14:29:26.037-07:002010-05-21T14:29:26.037-07:00I've only had two cats - both of them were/are...I've only had two cats - both of them were/are inside only cats, and neither were particularly suited to be outside unattended. The first was a siamese female who never grew more than 3.5 lbs, and my current cat, a devon rex - has very little hair (and also I would be scared someone would steal him because of his unusual appearance )

That being said - I have changed my practice on inside only for exactly the reason you stated. Cats will find ways to sneak out, and I don't want him completely unfamiliar with the outside world. So we go outside in the backyard on a harness and a leash. I sit and read, he plays with his two best friends - my Basset Hounds.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
